Guide to Back Probe Connectors

Back Probes

While back probes are capable of coming soldered to wire on a premade test lead, E-Z-Hook provides two standalone adapter options with banana sockets on the rear end of the connector that are able be connected to most standard banana plugs test leads and jumpers. Used in conjunction with most hand-held digital multimeters (DMM’s), such as Fluke, and other testing equipment. These nifty little needle probes are the perfect electronic accessory when a quick and easy test connection needs to be made without piercing the wire insulation. Designed to give the user all they need to provide reliable and secure electrical connection.

No piecing needle incisions

No stripping of cutting wire

Maintains wire integrity

Paired With

Popular for in conjunction with banana plug test leads and jumpers. Banana plug jumpers are used as electrical contact points to open/close/bypass electrical circuits to regulate the electrical circuit board. E-Z-Hook’s 9183 (PVC) and 9898 (Silicone) are popular banana plug jumpers for use with the back probes, especially the 144″ lead lengths, as it makes it easy to test components from the front and back of the vehicle without moving equipment.

How it Works

Back probes (also called back pinning) are an alternative method for piercing wire while still avoiding stripping or cutting wire insulation to access the conductor. The back probes needle contact tip is inserted in-between the wire insulation and the conductor to achieve instant connection. For this connector, users must be able to access the end of wires.

Alternative Solutions

An insulation-piercing connector (also referred to as an insulation-piercing clip, insulation displacement connector, piercing probe, or wire tap) has a needle or multiple needles that pierce the wires outer insulation jacket to access the wires internal (single or multi) conductor for testing. By activating the needle(s) upon wire contact, diagnostic testing is able to occur as an instant connection is created to your DMM (digital multimeters), safety analyzers, circuits/boards, or other testing equipment. This non-invasive testing is perfect for hard to reach wires and also eliminates the time consuming and destructive nature of strip or cutting wire to access the conductor for testing. Upon removal of the needle(s), only a small incision(s) or hole(s) is left, ensuring wire integrity is maintained. To activate the piercing needle, connectors generally have manual screw tightening devices or a simple spring activation. Insulation-piercing components provide users with a fast, easy-to-use installation onto wire. E-Z-Hook manufactures both hand-held and deployable connectors in various sizes and needle bed configurations. Industries

Versatile for multiple industry applications, like electrical and industrial, but we find these particularly popular in the automotive testing and repair fields. Unlike, quick and easy to use piercing probes, mechanics and automotive techs opt to use back probes to avoid tampering with a client’s wire in their car to bypass potential safety compromises in the rare occurrence the slight incisions piercing probes can provide. The flexible back probing pins are great for sliding into automotive connectors like those on fuel injectors and MAP sensors. Pick up a set to add to your tool kit today!
